Getting around Scotland efficiently changes your holiday from rushed to relaxed. Here’s what actually works.
Should You Rent a Car?
This depends entirely on your plans. Renting is brilliant for Highlands exploring, accessing remote walking trails, and island-hopping at your own pace. It’s unnecessary if you’re staying in Edinburgh or Stirling—both cities are walkable and have excellent public transport. Parking in Edinburgh city centre is expensive and stressful; countryside parking is free and easy.
Our advice: if you’re visiting multiple regions or planning countryside activities, rent. If you’re city-based, use public transport and save the money.
Trains: Surprisingly Good
Scotland’s rail network connects major cities. Edinburgh to Stirling takes 40 minutes. Edinburgh to Glasgow takes an hour. Book advance tickets and they’re reasonable. The scenery on the Highlands line is stunning. Trains are relaxing, no driving stress, and you can work or read en route.
Buses: Budget Option
Long-distance buses (Citylink, Megabus) connect cities cheaply but take longer than trains. Local buses within cities are reliable, cheap, and usually frequent. If you’re not in a hurry, buses work fine.
Taxis and Apps
Edinburgh and Stirling have Uber and local taxi apps. Ayr has fewer options but taxis exist. They’re useful for late-night returns or when weather is awful, but expensive for regular use.
What We Recommend We advise based on your actual plans, not generic advice. Flying into Edinburgh for a week? Walk the city, take a train to Stirling, perhaps rent a car for a day trip.
