Scottish holidays fail when you try to do everything. Here’s how to plan an itinerary where you actually relax instead of constantly driving.
5-Day Itinerary: Edinburgh Focus
Stay in Edinburgh (our New Town townhouse is perfect). Day 1: Explore Old Town, Castle, and Royal Mile. Day 2: New Town architecture, galleries, museums. Day 3: Arthur’s Seat walk, Portobello beach walk, or Leith exploration. Day 4: Day trip to Stirling (train takes 40 minutes) or North Berwick. Day 5: Slow morning, last-minute shopping, return.
Why this works: you’re based in one place, reducing stress. Edinburgh is big enough to fill five days without feeling rushed.
7-Day Itinerary: Multi-City
Days 1-2: Edinburgh as above. Day 3: Travel to Stirling (our central flat), explore castle and town. Day 4: Day trip to Bridge of Allan or a Highlands drive. Day 5: Travel to Ayr (our ten-sleeper), explore coast. Day 6: Ayrshire activities (Burns Cottage, water sports, countryside). Day 7: Slow morning, beach walk, return.
Why this works: three properties, three cities, natural rhythm. You’re moving but not rushing. You’re seeing variety without being exhausted.
10-Day Itinerary: The Full Experience
Days 1-3: Edinburgh. Day 4: Travel to Stirling, spend two nights (enough time to actually relax). Days 6-7: Travel to Ayr, spend two nights. Day 8: Optional extras (Galloway Forest, Isle of Arran day trip from Ayr). Days 9-10: Return to Edinburgh for final exploration or just cosy time at the property before leaving.
Why this works: proper time in each place. You’re not constantly packing/unpacking. You get rhythm and real downtime, not just ticking boxes.
